Since the canal's construction, local residents now have to use one of the five swing bridges to cross from one shore to the other. In some cases, farmers had their land split between the two banks and had to take long detours to reach their fields.

When a boat approached, the bridge operator, stationed in a watchtower, was in charge of opening and closing the bridge. They would oftentime use this time to chat with the passengers.
