The Canal's Opening

Due to significant delays, work accelerated between 1897 and 1898, continuing even through the winter months to meet new deadlines.

However, it was not until August 1899 that water first filled the Soulanges Canal, allowing barges and dredgers to pass through two months before the official opening, while the final masonry and finishing touches were being completed.

On October 9, 1899, the Soulanges Canal was officially inaugurated, unveiling a technological masterpiece that met the new demands of maritime transport.
