The 'canaller' Outarde leaves Lock No. 2 at Pointe-des-Cascades, heading toward Lake St-Louis en route to Montreal.

Commissioned in 1899, the Soulanges Canal stretches for 23.4 kilometers and includes five locks, each measuring 85.3 meters in length, 13.7 meters in width, and 4.3 meters in depth, with a rise of 7.2 meters.

These infrastructures allowed ships to overcome a total elevation of 24 meters between Lake St-François and Lake St-Louis, and could accommodate vessels weighing over 3,000 tons. Thanks to innovative technology and the electrification of lock operations, the full transit of the canal took an average of three hours.
