Saint-Joseph Church becomes Sainte-Amélie
Amy Irwin Adams McCormick, the Colonel’s wife, regrettably passed away during the construction of the church. Devastated by his sudden loss, the Colonel wanted to endow the new Baie-Comeau church with a beautiful, large stained-glass window to pay tribute to his wife’s artistic taste.
As construction was well underway, the architect was consulted regarding the feasibility of such a project. It was made clear to McCormick that such a significant change would be very costly and that the plans would have to be redrawn. The architect suggested frescoes instead and recommended an artist nicknamed “the Michelangelo of Montreal” to paint them. And this is how Guido Nincheri was commissioned to execute the interior decoration of Sainte-Amélie Church.
