The Huron-Wendat used cedar to make the inner frame of traditional bark canoes, but not for making their covering. Cedar is rotproof and very mould resistant because of its high organic content. It is therefore excellent for building the structure of a canoe since it does not rot on contact with water and has a longer useful life.
