Bravo! Birch bark was the material that the Huron-Wendat preferred for covering the exterior of their traditional bark canoes.
Since birch bark is smooth, resistant, waterproof and light, it was ideal for making the outer covering of bark canoes. Contrary to other types of bark that cover the length of tree trunks, birch bark wraps itself around them and is thus very malleable.
Birch was readily available on Huron-Wendat territory. However, other nations had more limited access to it and were thus obliged to use bark from other species (spruce, elm, cedar and pine) instead.
