M.P. EMÉLIE
This scale model of the M.P. EMÉLIE coastal ship was crafted by Nelson Sheedy of Saint-Laurent-de-l’Île-d’Orléans in 1976.
The wooden M.P. EMÉLIE coastal ship itself was built by chief shipwright Paul Mailloux on L'Isle-aux-Coudres, in 1957, for the Perron brothers. Éloi Perron was her captain.
This vessel is the last schooner to be built on L'Isle-aux-Coudres.
The name of the schooner had special meaning for her captain: “M” for his son Michel, “P” for his father Polycarpe and “Emélie” for his mother.
This coastal ship transported 500 tons of freight at fair speeds of up to 8.5 knots.
Unfortunately, with the radical changes that occurred in maritime transport at the time, the service career of this coastal ship was short-lived.
It is said that, during Captain Perron’s funeral, the schooner’s stranded remains left Baie-Saint-Paul, oddly enough carried away by a tide so low that it was almost impossible to believe.
On L'Isle-aux-Coudres, visitors can tour another schooner built for the Perron brothers: the MONT ST-LOUIS, entirely restored by Éloi Perron in 2005.'
