MONTCALM

This scale model of the MONTCALM was built by Cyrille Fortin. The model represents a steel ship built at the Napier & Miller Ltd. shipyard, in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1904.
It was the largest and most powerful icebreaker at the time. Owing to her rugged stem, the ship could to ride over the ice to some extent. In addition, the MONTCALM could easily move fore or aft to break the ice, given the sturdy design of her hull.
This ship contributed to the establishment of bases located at Port Burwell, in Wakeham Bay and on Nottingham Island to provide supplies along the Hudson Bay route. This two-propeller icebreaker was used on the St. Lawrence River until 1942.
