Mary Celeste Mystery Ship

The legendary Mary Celeste

Perhaps one of the biggest mysteries of the sea is the story of the Mary Celeste. Originally built in 1861 in Spencer’s Island and named the Amazon, this vessel led a life full of misfortune leading many to regard her as jinxed. Most noted for her ill-fated voyage to Genoa Italy where she was found adrift off the Azores with the entire crew and captains family missing, this vessel never seemed to have a happy ending. From her first sailing when Captain McLellan grew extremely ill and was rushed home to Spencer’s Island where he died until the fateful day when Captain Parker choose to drive her onto a reef off Haiti intending to commit insurance fraud, the vessel left a trail of loss both financial and in lives lost or changed forever.

In 2001 noted author and adventurer Clive Cussler of National Underwater & Marine Agency (NUMA) and John Davis of Eco-Nova Productions announced the discovery of the remains of The Mary Celeste.

Archeologist James Delgado carefully studied the remains and identified her as the Mary Celeste.

In 2021 John Davis unearthed boxes containing the recovered remains of the Mary Celeste in his warehouse and decided it was time she went home. Through his kindness and generosity those remains rest here now only a few kilometers from her birth place. A mysterious tale of the sea never forgotten but at last returned.
