City Hall Square ✨

City Hall Square Park

Built in 1994 by the city, City Hall Square Park is a symbol of a once very vibrant site in Edmundston. Some of the most important buildings once located on the site were the Royal Hotel, the Boucher Funeral Home and the Hartt sisters’ house.

The Royal Hotel…

Built in 1865, the Royal Hotel had four floors, thirty bedrooms, three sample rooms available to merchants, a barber shop, a reception room, a dining room and three lounges. The hotel was located at the corner of Court and Canada Street.

The Royal Hotel

The Royal Hotel has hosted many significant events. For example, when the future Prime Minister, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, came to the region in 1896, he chose the Royal Hotel to give a speech from a balcony.

Unfortunately, the Royal Hotel burned to the ground in 1989.

The City Hall Square Park has been designated as a local heritage site for its commemoration as a former downtown Edmundston activity hub and for its current cultural role. For over 30 years, the park has also been the venue for the Jazz & Blues Festival and Musical Wednesdays.
