Efficient and Elegant Structures

Every element composing the Soulanges Canal features impressive masonry works and innovative structures that combine efficiency and beauty. The mastermind behind this work is chief engineer Thomas Monro (1831-1903).


To prevent water overflow due to the height of the locks, vast basins called 'biefs' were created, with arched walkways allowing the lock keepers to move about. Near Lock No. 4, a boat serving as a floating workshop is moored.
