Divers were hired by the Soulanges Canal to perform maintenance and repairs on underwater structures of the canal, including lock doors. The average salary of these workers were $3.00 per day.

During World War I, the Soulanges Canal, due to its strategic location, was continuously monitored by the Canadian Army. Here, diver Narcisse Masse and his assistant, Narcisse Lafrance, worked under close armed guard.
