A Swing Bridge and its Watchtower
Around 1907

In addition to 5 locks, the canal featured 5 large metal swing bridges located at the intersections of the various roads crossing the canal. To accommodate these bridges, built by the Dominion Bridge Company of Lachine, imposing concrete abutments (the bases of the bridges) were installed at the foot of the southern bank of the canal.

These bridges had a capacity of 8 tons and were 75 meters long. A watchtower was installed on each bridge and served as the operation post for the bridge operator responsible for opening and closing them. While the swing bridges were dismantled and replaced by roads, the abutments are still present and used as rest areas along the bike path.
