The Railroad

Engine 424. Engineer: Jin Williams. Driver: Grégoire Lussier. Photo taken in winter 1942.

The economic development of this part of the country depended on the construction of the

railway belonging to Main Central. A clearing operation began in 1887. 200 to 300 men were

hired to build the railway line and the first train began to run in 1889. The Hereford Railway was

leased to Main Central and operated until 1926.

The train runs twice a day from Cookshire to Beecher Falls and Boston. About 2 miles (3.2 km)

from the station, a 100-foot-long (30.5 m) iron bridge brings the train to Paquetteville.
