3Stop 2: Cataract Falls
Cataract Falls has been a defining feature of the Saco River for all who have called this region home.
It was likely a place for Indigenous Peoples to fish before becoming a scenic residential area for colonial settlers.
Throughout the summer, you'll still find many anglers along this walkway and out on the Saco River's waters in search of Shad, Striped Bass, and other fish.
This landscape painting by William S. Gookin depicts "Cutts Island" in its last years as a residential area before the mass development of textile mills.

The strength of the waters flowing over the falls eventually powered the growth of an industrial hub here in Saco & Biddeford.
