In the 18th and 19th centuries, the ch. du Fleuve (River Road) was a mandatory stop for fur and merchandise traders. They would stop to rest before continuing their journey through the turbulent rapids of the St. Lawrence River, located between Lake St-Louis and Lake St-François.

With the construction of the Soulanges Canal, Les Cèdres continued its maritime vocation in various ways, as many residents worked at the canal or managed establishments such as hotels, inns, or shops to accommodate workers and visitors passing through. Before the installation of the municipal aqueduct, several windmills could be seen in the village near the river. They were used to pump water and transport it to the cisterns of neighboring homes and farms.
