The Saco River's Diverse Habitat
The Saco River is home to a diverse array of wildlife habitats — from tidal clam flats and marshes to impoundments and fast-flowing sections of river.

Many of the tributaries along the Saco River provide spawning habitat for migratory fish species that play a critical role in the food chain for wildlife throughout the Saco River Basin.
The lower section of the river — the estuary — is home to the most diverse fish populations, and is a primary area of focus for state agencies and research universities studying the ecosystem.
Migratory Ocean Fish:

Other areas of study include phytoplankton, eel grass, coastal erosion, and more.
